Ha! It was neat hearing about the radio station that played Soul Coughing....that station was KJEE, originally owned and operated by my dad's former boss, and in those early days was transmitting out of his garage partway up Gibraltar Peak. I _LOVED_ those early days of that station - No DJs or commercials, and unique, alternative, definitely NOT mainstream music that you'd hear nowhere else.
The other somewhat unfortunate thing about that time period of that station was that you'd frequently hear something extremely cool, and have no clue what you were listening to....that was frustrating sometimes.
(And in a side note, they're operating a beautiful, shiny, new transmitter that just got lit up last year....it's a very pretty machine.)
